UPDATE: Man Dies After Car Burst Into Flames Following Crash

Witnesses pulled the man from his burning car.

A man has died following a fiery crash Thursday morning on Merrick Road near the Bellmore-Merrick border, Nassau County police reported.

According to detectives, a 66-year-old male was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry westbound on Merrick Road when he was involved in a collision with a 23-year-old female driving eastbound near Soma Avenue. 

The Camry became engulfed with flames and the driver was pulled from the vehicle by witnesses.  

The victim was transported to Nassau University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after 7 a.m. 

The 23 year old female driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.  

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.

According to a public information officer, Merrick Road was closed between Soma Avenue and Newbridge Road until around 11:30 a.m.
