Midday Accident on Merrick Road Sends Two to Hospital

Merrick Road eastbound at Bellmore Avenue was closed for accident investigation.

Several Nassau County Police personnel, ambulances and Bellmore Fire Department volunteers rushed to the scene of an accident on the southeastern corner of Merrick Road and Bellmore Avenue just after 1 p.m. this afternoon.

According to several witnesses at the scene, a black Chevrolet Suburban was traveling westbound on Merrick Road when the driver tried to make a left turn into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot. The SUV was allegedly struck by a white Town of Hempstead Conservation and Waterways pick up truck traveling eastbound on Merrick Road. The Suburban reportedly spun around and then hit a green lamp post on Dunkin Donuts' property. The rear passenger wheel came off and was lying on the ground next to the vehicle.

The Suburban was carrying a mother and her infant child, both of whom were transported to a local hospital by fire department ambulance. Witnesses at the scene said neither appeared to be injured.
