Cops: Man Admitted to Being on Heroin During Hit-and-Run

North Bellmore man faces charges after hit-and-run, admits to taking drugs before incident, cops said.

A North Bellmore man faces charges after he reportedly drove while on heroin and left the scene of an accident, reported New York State Police.

Cops said Steven Santo, 28, of North Bellmore, sideswiped a Volkswagen on the Southern State Parkway Friday at 6:41 p.m. Santo was driving a Chrysler sedan that belonged to a family friend at the time, police reported.

The driver of the Volkswagen reported the Chrysler’s license plate number as well as a description of Santo, which cops pursued to Westbury Jeep, troopers reported.

Santo later admitted he was under the influence of heroin at the time of the collision and police found more of the drug in his possession, along with Xanax pills, cops stated.

Santo was charged with driving while impaired by drugs, two counts of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, assault, and traffic violations. Santo had four outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead.
