WWII Vet Michael Joseph Davitt Dies at 86

Michael Joseph Davitt Jr. died on Sept. 25 at age 86.

Davitt enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in World War II in the Pacific theater. In recognition of his service on Okinawa, he was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was also a New York City police officer for over 25 years. A long time resident of Bellmore, Davitt is survived by his wife Elsa and daughters Geraldine Wilkins and Michelle Davitt.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:45 am on Oct. 2 at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Davitt's name to the Make A Wish Foundation.
