Teen Idea #1: Go See a Show at a Community Theatre

Want something to do this weekend? Go see a show!

Looking for something to do this weekend? Well why not go see a show? And no, I’m not talking about Broadway. In fact, there are tons of opportunities for seeing musicals or plays both during the day and at night at local community theatres in Bellmore and Merrick.

Some places you can go include the located in Bellmore Town and the located on Hewlett Avenue right off of Sunrise Highway in Merrick. The price range for tickets at both of these theatres range from about $9 to $20. So if you’re tired of going to the movie theater, go see a live production!

I talked to local teens, and they told me that they didn’t even know much about community theatres at all until I told them. Others that did know said that they enjoy getting groups of friends together and going to see shows on the weekends.

“It’s something fun and different,” one Bellmore teen said.

The great thing about going to see live productions is that no matter how many times you see one show, it can be different every time. Going to see a show at a community theatre can give you the same kind of rush that a Broadway show can, and it’s a whole lot cheaper and easier to do. Also, some of the people you see performing at these community theatres may have experience on Broadway or in film, so they can be just as talented as the professionals you see on TV or on Broadway.

If you find yourself totally immersed in the world of theatre, then why not spend your free time performing yourself? Classes for teens are available at the Merrick Theatre and Center for the Arts, where you can learn about acting, singing and dancing, or even perform in a show!

They also have a Glee Club. I’ve been taking classes there since I was 12 years old, and it is one of the places around town where I have the most fun and where I get to do what I love.

But if you’d rather just sit back and enjoy the show … Here are some great shows that you can go see this weekend in your community theatre.

Pippin – Watch Teens just like you perform this musical classic about a Prince who’s trying to find himself. Watch at the Merrick Theatre and Center for the Arts on Saturday at 5 p.m. or on Sunday at 11 a.m. (Another blogger on Patch, Lizzie Sudlow, and me, are both in this production!) Tickets are available at the booth before the show for $10.

A Shot in The Dark – Come see this heart pounding mystery drama at the Merrick Theatre and Center for the Arts for only $16 a ticket! It’s playing Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

101 Dalmatians – Come see this adorable Disney classic performed live for only $9 a ticket! It’s totally worth it! It’s playing Saturday at 2 p.m.

Bye Bye Birdie – See this musical classic at the Bellmore Movie Theater and Showplace for $20 Sunday at 2 p.m.

And look for new productions at these theaters every few weekends. Seeing a show is a great way to get out and about and have a great time.

So add it to your list of ideas when you’re trying to decide how you can spend your weekend around town!
