Kennedy HS Senior Wins Civic Group Scholarship Award

Aaron Birnbaum named recipient of South Merrick Community Civic Association Franklin M. Soling Memorial Scholarship award.

The South Merrick Community Civic Association (SMCCA) recently announced John F. Kennedy High School senior Aaron Birnbaum as the recipient of its Franklin M. Soling Memorial Scholarship award.

The award is named in memory of Frank Soling, a founding member of the SMCAA, who was a strong believer of supporting and giving back to the local community. The award was presented by SMCCA Trustee Mark Salsberg, during the JFK High School Awards Ceremony.

Birnbaum was honoring for his academic accolades as well as charitable efforts. In addition to his many school activities, Birnbaum  is a member of H.O.P.E. (Helping of Planet Earth (H.O.P.E), which involves spending  countless hours recycling and beautifying the school campus. Birnbaum is a yearly participant in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life raising funds in addition to organizing his team and creating  web design.  He is also involved in many social action programs as a vice president of the United Synagogue Youth.

As a musician, Birnbaum volunteers at local nursing homes entertaining the residents.  He has also found the time to volunteer at the Merrick  Library working with elementary age children in their reading program.  He plans to continue his education at Brandeis University this fall.
