Fundraiser to Benefit North Bellmore Boy With Cerebral Palsy

Proceeds from the event in West Hempstead will go directly towards helping Nate Scheuer of North Bellmore.

Small donations can go a long way. This Saturday, just a small donation from the community can give a young boy with cerebral palsy a chance to walk on his own again.

Proceeds from a fundraiser in West Hempstead will go directly towards helping Nate Scheuer of North Bellmore attend the physical therapy program at Keep Moving Forward in Great Neck, with the hopes that Nate will be able to sit, walk and run on his own one day.

Nate uses a special TheraSuit that helps him at physical therapy, assisting him in doing what so many children do naturally. Unfortunately, a three-week "boot camp" treatment for Nate costs close to $8,000 and is not covered by insurance.

"With cerebral palsy, their brains can't communicate to the muscles like normal," said Nate's father, David. "This suit helps build new pathways to the brain."

"He can’t sit and stand or walk on his own and this therapy could definitely help get him there," he said.

Jackie Berrios, a good friend of the family, was able to get the donations for food and desserts. When the previous donator of the desserts dropped out, Berrios was able to help bring on board celebrity chef Gail Chandler, the master chef and owner of On the Scene Cuisine and A Cake Lady creations.

Chandler will be attending the Merrick Street Fair & Festival the same day, but she said she couldn't pass at the chance to help Nate and his family, donating one of her custom designed desserts.

Nate's mom Jen has friends that are volunteers at the West Hempstead Fire Department, so the department agreed to host the event free of charge. The family is hoping for a nice turnout Saturday, with 90 people already confirmed to attend.

"We just want people to know that we really appreciate the help," Scheuer said. "It is heartwarming."

The fundraiser event takes place Saturday, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. at the West Hempstead firehouse, located at 295 Hempstead Turnpike. The event features an open bar and buffet, live music, raffles and chinese auction, and a 50/50.

Tickets for the fundraiser are $50 and can be paid through PayPal at NateScheuer@gmail.com or it can be paid at the door.
