Dinkelmeyer Elementary School recently hosted a walk-a-thon that raised approximately $30,000 for the 20-month-old daughter of one of its teachers.
The "Walk for Green" event was held in honor of Izabella Green, who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, cancer of the eyes. She recently underwent surgery to remove one of her eyes and is in the process of being fitted for a prosthetic one. She is the daughter of physical education teacher Bill Green.
The Dinkelmeyer community came together to help the Green family with the costs of medications, frequent doctor visits and surgeries.
Principal Faith Skelos said that the outpour of support for the Green family was encouraging.
"Sometimes something good comes out of something tragic," she said.
Approximately 350 young children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma each year in the United States. Retinoblastoma affects one in every 15,000 to 30,000 babies that are born in the United States. Children of all races and both sexes can be affected by the disease.
