The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will host its forum, “You’ve Earned a Say,” at the North Bellmore Public Library on Wednesday.
In response to an AARP national survey that was recently released about Americans concerns on Medicare and Social Security, the organization will give Long Islanders a chance to compare their own views to the rest of the nation.
AARP's national survey found that 98 percent of adults said that Medicare is important to people’s health in retirement and 54 percent said that they are confident that it will be there for them throughout their retirement. Ninety-six percent said that Social Security is important to retirement security, but only 49 percent believe that it will be there for them. The survey also found that the public believes that too many decisions about Social Security and Medicare are made behind closed doors and that national officials should spend more time listening to citizens.
According to the AARP, there are 463,850 Medicare beneficiaries and 515,380 Social Security recipients on Long Island.
The forum will take place at the library at 1 p.m.
