Headline should read 'CHRISTMAS' Tree Lighting, not tree lighting....
Ralph A. December 02, 2012 at 01:21 PM
It should not be called anything else other than "Christmas Tree". That's what it is. To me the word Tree" is insulting to the holiday.
Eileen M. December 02, 2012 at 08:26 PM
I am sooo tired of people complaining about it being called a "tree" or calling it a "winter celebration". All different people live in Bellmore and we all celebrate different holidays. I would like to thank the chamber, and the town for putting together such a wonderful holiday celebration that my family can enjoy, with all the people of Bellmore. Not just the selfish narcissistic people that just want to call it a "Christmas Tree". If that's your issue, than celebrate in your church. Because in my Christian church, I was taught love and tolerance. And ibecause I'm educated , and did my research, I know that the tree is not actually a Christian symbol at all. Happy Holidays to all of the Bellmores!! And thank you chamber!

"YOU'RE sooo tired"...I'm sorry, but whose narcissistic???...Sounds like that kind of thinking has some major insecurity issues...Just where did your 'education' take place - San Francisco???...That's where that kind of drivel emanates...The terms 'Christmas' tree has been around for centuries...Did you really take time out of your life to research the term Christmas tree???...What was the purpose of your investigation???...To prove to yourself that tradition that's incongruent with your own should be stiffled???...And what's so wrong for a religion and it's flock to embrace a symbol of celebration???...Why denigrade it???...Leave it alone...Let happy people be happy...And why do so many unhappy people have to bring down others to quell their own insecurities anyway???...All the 'different people' - as you say - in Bellmore are entitled to their own symbols and traditions...But people aren't 'different' ...Only 'thought' is different...Jealousy of majority thought is no way to go thru life...Create your own bush, tree, man-in-a-red-suit - whatever...And after you do, petition the Chamber of Commerce for it's inclusion in the spirit of the holidays...Maybe, just maybe, your symbol will stand the test of time and will eventually be thought of as a TRADITION too...I will have NO ill will toward you OR your symbol...Frankly, I couldn't care less...I don't begrudge anyone's traditions...And I'm sure the 'majority' will feel the same as I do...And I think that's the genesis of what makes you 'so tired', isn't it???...Some people just want to be relevant...But being jealous & anti-establisment just exposes a desperate need to be included and a need to overcome a depressed existence..."In God We Trust"....Does that bother you too???...God Bless Everyone - white, black, red, purple, Jew, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc...But may HE especially bless those with such troubled souls as those who feel the need to investigate the origin of the CHRISTMAS tree!!!....
Eileen M. December 03, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Such a long winded tantrum yet still not a mention of gratitude to the chamber. SO sad. Peace and love to all and don't worry, I'll say a prayer for you.
FedUpRealist December 06, 2012 at 03:37 PM
Nice comeback!!!...If your original thought was to simply "thank the Chamber", why didn't you just do so???...Why the tantrum about a 'CHRISTMAS' tree???...Your attempt to mask your personal feelings speaks volumes...Nice try though!!!...But seriously, may whatever it is that's void in your life fall into your lap on Christmas morn!!! (not much of a challenge here...half my brain tied behind my back just to make it fair)...

This article is simply announcing an event. They call it a "tree" because it is a tree. How is the word insulting to the holiday? If you are easily insulted by someone saying "Happy holidays" or people referring to a Christmas tree as a tree, you need to relax. Some of the commenters on here seem to get bent out of shape by every article. If you are offended/insulted by the TREE LIGHTING, don't go. Just stay at home to troll. By the way, Eileen M. seems to be the voice of reason. M. Murphy appears to get agitated easily. Maybe he/she will calm down if we all ignore.
FedUpRealist December 07, 2012 at 02:32 PM
Is this or is it not a space to voice one's opinion???....You've now voiced yours - however asinine I find it to be ( and most likely the majority/popular assumption)...Ask yourself, when u were a kid, didn't you call it a Christmas Tree???...What traumatic experience in your life changed you so that you feel ok to 'alter' the traditions of the majority???...Why so anti-establishment???...This time of year it's called a Christmas Tree by an OVERWHELMING majority...If you haven't found your niche in society, don't try to alter traditions of others who have...Eileen can pray that you & her find some meaning somewhere amongst the trees...I'm sure you and Eileen can put up your own 'Non-Secular Sycamore' in the middle of town and invite all your freinds with the same twisted ideology...As far as characterizing me as unable to relax or me sounding agitated , that couldn't be farther from the truth...I enjoy taking on malcontents...It's like shooting fish in a barrel...Merry Christmas...Oh, excuse me- Happy Holidays!!!
Tom H December 07, 2012 at 03:29 PM
Haha wow. I still call it a Christmas tree. I didn't say we should be calling it anything else. I'm just saying that it is indeed a tree, and the town calling a ceremony a "tree lighting" doesn't necessarily alter the holiday. I apologize for trying to falsely characterize you. I understand that it is a place to voice one's opinion. But your abundance of caps lock and question marks make you seem really heated. From looking at some articles on here, it appears that your version of "taking on malcontents" is typing real big at anyone who chimes in. Just my opinion. Again, I'm sorry for offending you in any way. I'm not going to say it wasn't my intention because it probably was originally. But I was wrong. And I didn't mean to drag you into this Eileen. Merry Christmas M.
FedUpRealist December 08, 2012 at 02:30 PM
No apology necessary...That is what this space is for - one's opiniion...The caps are for emphasis - nothing more...

"Happy Holidays" don't bother me because you are saying all from HappyThanksgiving to Happy New Year's. But would you call the Menorah Candles just "Candles". I bet you not. Every place I have ever gone to (including the city: "Rockerfeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting"). It was not call a tree. Or at other ceromonies" "Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting". Other than that it really don't bother me. Because I take it from where it comes from. Selfish and disrespectful people.
Eileen M. December 08, 2012 at 07:10 PM
I'm amazed at all this. The Bellmore I live in is filled with wonderful people that celebrate all different holidays. I would explain how they all are actually plagerized off pagan holidays and the Christians adapted the tree from the pagan winter celebration to convert them.... But I'll just leave or there. I don't want M. Murphy to have heart failure. Lol. Happy Holidays to everyone !!
FedUpRealist December 09, 2012 at 07:46 PM
You tried to hide behind an intellectually dishonest premise of just wanting to thank the chamber...How's that 'Just Wanting to Thank the Chamber' explanation working for you now???.......EXPOSED, weren't you!!!...I knew your thought process must've come from some deep-seeded abnormal psychosis...Plagerized off pagan holidays???...Are you kidding me???...How would YOU know how many wonderful people there are in the Bellmores???...I pegged you right from the start...Now go back to '6 days ago' and re-read my characterization...SPOT ON!!!....Not very popular, are you???...I'm on my way out to buy yet another thumb-tack board for the incredible amount of Xmas cards I've already recieved...How 'bout you??? .
Eileen M. December 09, 2012 at 09:05 PM
You are such a troubled soul... I feel pity for people like you.
Tom H December 10, 2012 at 02:36 PM
M. Murphy. I commend your efforts. You disproved each of her sentences. But she doesn't feel wrong and she's not going to. Nothing is going to change anyone's mind during an internet comments argument. M obviously feels correct and so does Eileen. M, enjoy the new fish in your barrel. Eileen, don't call M a troubled soul (not for you to decide) and try not to feel pity on M. And M, I've see you tell people on other articles to choose their battles more wisely. Maybe you should take your own advice and see that this is a waste of your and Eileen's time. You made your point, she made hers. I made one a while ago, then kind of gave up because you seemed too excited to deal with. One would expect the comments section to be a healthy exchange of views on an article, but that's not the case. Now that the Christmas tree is lit, we can all just focus on the real matter at hand. Why is the photo of a young woman dressed as Santa? That's not a Christmas tree at all!
