Calhoun Choral Group Brings Holiday Cheer to Nursing Home

Students sang to residents at the Broadlawn Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Amityville.

Members of Calhoun High School's Express Yourself Choral Club recently brought some holiday cheer to residents at the Broadlawn Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Amityville.

Express Yourself, a club comprised of students from both the On-Tour Company theater program and Prep for the Future program, sang holiday favorites such as “Jingle Bells,” “Oh Hanukkah,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”

Prep for the Future prepares students with special needs to tackle life after high school and become self-supporting adults, functioning successfully in a variety of environments.

The Express Yourself club gives On-Tour members a way to mentor Prep for the Future students through acting, singing and dancing.

“Express Yourself is a club that combines the students from our On-Tour program with the Prep for the Future students,” Adviser Wendy Simson said. “It’s really important because this not only helps our Prep students in socializing and giving back to the community, but it also helps the On-Tour students because they get a sense of empathy, compassion, friendship and leadership skills for themselves too.”
