Bellmore-Merrick Schools Hold Toy Drives for Sick Kids

Students collected hundreds of gifts for hospitalized children to enjoy after the holidays.

Three schools within the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District collected hundreds of toys for former Senator Charles Fuschillo's Extend the Holidays Toy Drive as part of a districtwide effort among all schools to help those in need during the holiday season.

Calhoun High School, Mepham High School and Merrick Avenue Middle School students took part in the month-long drive.

The toy drive, which has been taking place since 1998, brings gifts to children at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola after the holidays and throughout the year to help them through difficult times.

Calhoun students donated 500 toys, while Mepham students collected eight boxes of gifts and Merrick Avenue students gathered six large bags of goodies.

“We deliver all of the toys to Winthrop-University Hospital after the holidays, when kids come back to the hospital,” Fuschillo said. “For a moment, they forget why they are there. It brings a lot of joy to their lives.”
