Bellmore Helps Those Impacted by Sandy
Looking back at some stories in which the community banded together to help one another.
When Hurricane Sandy struck, locals banded together to raise money, collect food and clothing and do whatever they could to help their neighbors.
Here's a look at some of those local stories from last year on Patch.
- Hurricane Sandy Sends Bellmore-Merrick EMS Into Action: Bellmore-Merrick EMS was very busy answering calls and lending a helping hand in response to Hurricane Sandy.
- Bellmore Chef Cooks for Sandy Victims: Chef Joseph Ciminera of South Bellmore used his cooking talents to make a giant batch of soup to give out to local residents who needed a break from their clean-up or just wanted to get out of their cold houses for something hot to eat.
- Bellmore Bulldogs Volunteer for Sandy Victims: A group of students from the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District participated in a recovery initiative for the storm-devastated Long Beach community.
- Bellmore Library Serves as Warming Center After Sandy: Three days after Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on Long Island, people of all ages, from all walks of life and from various surrounding towns sought shelter at the Bellmore Memorial Library.
- Musicians Band Together for Sandy Victims: When Frank Delape of the Red White & Blues Band saw seven of his friends lose their homes to Superstorm Sandy, he knew a benefit concert would offer some much needed relief.
- Kennedy Hosts Free Community Dinner: Students, parents, faculty, staff and members of the community gathered in the John F. Kennedy High School Cafeteria to enjoy a free dinner provided by the student government, PTA, school administration and the Kennedy Alumni Association. Around 250 people came to eat dinner and refocus after Hurricane Sandy.
- Shore Road Kids Collect Supplies for Sandy Victims: Members of the chorus and RAK Pack at Bellmore’s Shore Road School hosted a school supply drive to help replenish supplies lost during Superstorm Sandy.
- Kennedy Students Volunteer for Sandy Victims: A group of students from John F. Kennedy High School volunteered in their local community to aid in the relief of Hurricane Sandy victims.
- NBFD Hosts Food and Clothing Drive: The North Bellmore Fire Department’s Engine and Rescue Company #2 hosted a food and clothing drive to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy in Island Park.
- Bellmore FD Collects for Sandy Victims: The Bellmore Fire Department collected food and clothes to be distributed to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
- Garden at St. Marks Collects, Distributes Food and Clothing to Victims: The Garden at St. Marks served as a drop-off/pick-up sight for items needed by those in our community.
- Dorothy's School of Dance Hosts Sandy Dance-A-Thon: Hurricane Sandy has affected all of us in so many different ways. Please join us as we try to provide some much needed inspiration and relief to our community.
- Bellmore Church Helps with Sandy Relief Efforts: Some Seaford residents teamed up with a Bellmore church Monday to help with the ongoing relief efforts from Superstorm Sandy through a peanut butter and jelly brigade.
- JFK 'Dancing With The Teachers' Raises $7K for Sandy Relief: Eight John F. Kennedy High School (JFKHS) teachers partnered up with professional dancers and showed off their moves at the “JFK Dancing with the Teachers” competition.
