Week in Review

Continuing our mission of embedding Bellmore Patch into the hearts of the community.

In Business news we gave an update on Jan. 12 on when Umberto's will open and why a stop work order was placed on their Bedford Avenue location. On Jan. 13 we posted a story about local residents opposing a proposed White Castle on Sunrise Highway. On Jan. 14 after the devastating news that Haiti was hit by an earthquake, Kiwanian Seth Meyerowitz wrote a story on how the Bellmore Kiwanis is helping residents send aid and items for relief efforts. Saturday morning we ran a feature on a Bellmore interior designer who modeled a dentist's office in an airplane motif.

On the Government news front, the Aqua NY public takeover debate dominated news on Jan. 11. Legislator Denenberg was poised to take his fight to Hempstead Town Hall on Jan.12, when the Towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay announced they would investigate the possibility of a public takeover of Aqua NY. Be sure to check out Ryan Bonner's video on this! On Jan. 12 we reported on happenings at the North Bellmore Civic Association meeting. Patch was also at a Nassau County Bar Association meeting where lawmakers discussed the current state of animal laws.

In the Opinion section, Assemblyman David McDonough offered a column on Jan. 12 about the state budget and one on Jan. 15  which discussed a new Web site about government waste, fraud and abuse cases. Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes sent Patch a copy of his induction speech, which we ran on Jan. 13. Senator Charles Fuschillo, Jr. reminded residents about their right to grieve property tax assessments in a Jan. 14 column. Also on Jan. 14, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice offered tips on how to avoid scams related to Hatian relief efforts.

In Fire & Police news, the North Bellmore Fire Department EMS unit assisted a resident who requested to be transported to the hospital on Jan. 10. On Jan. 13 we published our weekly Crime Report, which was complied from reports from the First and Seventh Precincts.

In School News, MAP students organized a blood drive, Grand Avenue students made their annual visit to Lillian Wald Nursery School and culminated their Family Project with a celebration. On Jan. 15 we ran a story that covered the events from the North Bellmore Board of Education meeting on Jan. 14. The story also included a few videos of student and teacher presentations.

Boys and girls basketball, ice hockey wrestling and bowling were all included in our expansive sports coverage this week.
