Police Warn of Kidnap Scam

Editor's Note: This article was written and submitted by Jason Molinet.

Nassau County Police are searching for a man trying to extort money over the phone in a kidnap scam.

Police say 13 incidents have been reported since Nov. 1 and each has involved a caller stating that a family member had been kidnapped, held hostage or involved in an auto accident. The caller then asks the victim to send money, usually through Western Union, to save or help the family member.

“It’s a demand of money and we're asking everyone to be aware,” Public Information Officer Eloise Abdullah said.

Three of the incidents included the threat of serious physical injury against the person being held, police said. The phone calls have come before noon in all but one case.

Officials warn this is an ongoing telephone scam and to report any similar incidents to police. Nassau Police ask if you believe you may have been a victim of this scam, please call 911 immediately.

One Freeport resident claims his family was contacted. "So [Monday] some creeps thought they would scam family members by saying they kidnapped a family member," the man posted on Facebook. "And would shoot them if $2,000 wasn't delivered to a set destination."

Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the party responsible are asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS (8477). All calls remain anonymous.

This has been going on for awhile in different areas.. key is NOT to give or volunteer info.. they usually start when you pick up by asking, "hey, who is this?" .. DO NOT volunteer info. bc then they start using tactics to get you to volunteer info!! if someone calls me, and asks , "who is this?"... im like back, WHO IS THIS>>YOU CALLED ME!!!!! .. if they dont answer.. CLICK.. cant be that important!! Be safe people

It must be a cultural thing. What group would practice such nonsense? Better yet, what group would believe such nonsense?
Then there is the financial issure. What neighborhoods are they calling to? Are they calling homes in poor neighborhoods? What nonsense!

Go a call a few weeks ago telling me that my brother was in a car accident. I asked where he was and what was his name. They said I knew his name. I put the phone down and called him from another number and he was home and fine. I told them they were mistaken. They proceeded to call me back 3 more times.

Challenge the caller !! Ask who is calling.. make them tell you more information.. and DO NOT give out any information.. Spread the word.. especially towards senior citizens.. they target the elderly .. be careful

The caller calls from a pay phone, in at least one of the instances was at a supermarket.

If someone else has the opportunity to do this, call 911 on the other phone, tell them which number the guy is calling you on and then try to keep him on the line. They can do a trace in about 2.5 minutes and nail this creep.

Also watch out for calls trying to get you to get a free estimate on home repairs. They are casing your house, trying to determine who lives in your house and when you are home. Use caller id and don't answer calls you dont know who it is. If it is legit they will leave a real number. Number of home have been cased this way.

I have read 4 complaints posted at www.callercenter.com related to this kidnap scam and I'm amazed at how freely scammers can call people, get their money and get away with it just as easily.

I have my caller ID set up so that people who have blocked numbers can't get through. I think that if people activate that feature they won't get the calls.

Natalie. I am so sorry to read this. I too have a little 5 yr. old dog who I love desperately...Read More and I feel your pain. There is another website for an organization that does an amazing job finding lost pets. It's LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM There is a small fee, but they get signs up all over the area and have a phone system set up where everyone in the area of where she was lost gets a PHONE CALL ALERT message to watch for Molly. They leave a phone number and their website address so if anyone has seen her or has her they know where to call. Great system! Check it out! I've never used them, but I HAVE received calls myself recently on 2 separate lost dogs and I've seen the many photos they hung up in my area in Levittown for dogs lost within a few miles of this area. In other words, they DO what they say they will do to help find Molly. Just want you to know what is out there to help you bring Molly home. My grandkids go to school around Grand and Camp Ave. We'll be watching for her! God Bless and good luck! I'm sure she will be returned to you real soon!!
