PHOTOS: South of Merrick Road Feels Brunt of Irene

Post-Hurricane Irene photos from south of Merrick Road.

The winds of Tropical Storm Irene are still blowing, but tons of damage and flooding has already been reported throughout the Bellmore-Merrick area.

As of 11:05 a.m., approximately 11,500 power outages were reported by LIPA between the two towns -- 5,100 of which were reported between the Southern State Parkway and North Jerusalem Avenue.

Some homes in the two communities lost power around 1 a.m. and still have not gotten it back.

Around 11 a.m., Patch editor A.J. Voelpel reported that most areas south of Merrick Road in Bellmore and Merrick were nearly completely flooded. Voelpel said he could only drive south on Bellmore Avenue and once he looked left or right, all streets were flooded.

Many of the sidestreets in Bellmore south of Merrick Road have had flooding reported.
