David Wright Wants What You Want

Here's a closer look at the Mets' most valuable player, David Wright.

When the Mets lost one of the faces of their franchise last winter, a fear coursed through the fan base that the departure of Jose Reyes was the beginning of a mass exodus. Could David Wright, the franchise’s other face, once thought to be a pillar the team would build a championship team around, be next?

The issue of Wright’s long-term future remained a cloud hanging over the 2012 Mets, especially when Wright, who is under team control for 2013 with a $16 million team option, made it clear he would not negotiate an extension in-season. Then Wright got off to a torrid start, flirting with .400 for the first six weeks of the season. He played through a broken finger, put up MVP numbers and the Mets were winning. The uncertainties of the future were put on hold.

But as the Mets continue their annual second half swoon, focus has once again shifted to the future of the franchise and who will be a part of it. For his part, Wright has been diplomatic about his future, claiming that his avoidance of in-season negotiations is purely to keep his focus on the field while stating a desire to remain with the Mets long term.

“Coming up through the system, I have a tremendous amount of loyalty to this organization,” Wright told the New York Post. “I can’t tell you what the future holds, but I’m hoping — optimistic — that something will get done.”

But before Wright commits to the Mets long-term, he wants something in return. Some were shocked to learn that the man’s motivation isn’t altogether monetary, that he desires a chance to win a World Series over the almighty dollar, unlike a certain former Mets shortstop.

But why is that shocking? It shouldn’t be. I came to a realization yesterday when reading this post at another great Mets blog “The Eddie Kranepool Society.” Or maybe I just remembered something that I never should have forgotten. I remembered that what David Wright wants isn’t any different than what we want. David Wright wants to win and, frankly, he wants to win as a Met. Those who know Wright, even from afar like we as fans do, shouldn’t be stunned by that and we certainly shouldn’t be angry about it.

As we all know, Wright grew up in Virginia as a Mets fan. His home was close to the Mets’ longtime Triple-A home in Norfolk and without a team in nearby D.C. until years later, Wright gravitated toward the Mets. It was a dream come true for him when at 18-years-old he was selected by the Mets with the 38th overall pick in the 2001 draft.

Now 29, Wright’s Mets fandom is much like mine, though he’s got a few years on me. Wright was four when the Mets last won a World Series. He suffered through the dismal early and mid 90’s Mets as a kid just like I did. He almost certainly was ridiculed by bandwagon Yankees fans as they rose to glory and left the Mets in their dust. Wright was in high school when the Mets last made the World Series in 2000 and he was drafted just six months after the failed pursuit of a player who may have otherwise blocked his spot, another player who grew up a Mets fan: Alex Rodriguez.

Wright understands what it’s like for Mets supporters intimately because he’s been there both as a fan and as a player. He experienced the highs and lows before he became a member of the organization and has since experienced incredible highs (2006) and lows (every season thereafter) on the field.

He recognizes as well as you and I do that the team has been in a state of flux for several years now. Before he signs another contract, likely to be his last big one, David Wright wants to know that the commitment is there, from the top all the way on down, to getting back to what the Mets — his Mets — were on the doorstep of in 2006. He wants to be as successful as the team he watched as a young baseball dreamer in 1986. He wants his team to be revered as they were in 1999 and 2000, not a one-hit wonder as they were in 2006.

“You want to be able to win, and I’ve only experienced a little bit of that here,” Wright told the Post. “In a perfect world, we get this thing turned around and going in the right direction and ultimately I get to experience the bad, the ugly and the good here, which includes winning.”

Like you, David Wright wants to be sure what he’s signing up for. Like you, David Wright wants to understand the direction in which his team is heading. Like you, David Wright wants to make sure that the owners of the franchise have the resources to make the Mets a contender again and have our best interest in mind. Like you, David Wright wants the Mets to win.

Can we really fault him for that?

Hey wilpon watch wright leave and again you get nothing. You are a joke and have the worst run pro franchise in sports. How met fans support this inept management and ownership is beyond me.
John K. Massaro August 22, 2012 at 06:45 pm
Because it beats supporting a team that wins via Payroll & HGH...
John Gruber August 22, 2012 at 06:48 pm
Phillies, Mets ala 2006, Redsox, Tigers....Rays, Nationals, Orioles. Your payroll doesn't always decide your record. It's not what you pay it's who you pay...
Mac August 22, 2012 at 07:47 pm
He John Massaro do any of these names sound familair? Guillermo Mota, Felix Heredia, and Scott Schoeneweis tested positive. In addition, the Mitchell Report lists Paul LoDuca, Lenny Dykstra, David Segui, Josias Manzanillo, Todd Hundley, Matt Franco, Mo Vaughn, Chris Donnels, Todd Pratt, Mike Stanton, Mark Carreon, Paul Byrd, Gary Matthews, and Fernando Vina. No tto mention the rumors of Piazza. They ALL PLAYED FOR THE METS. Lets not claim the Mets are clean in anyway. I guess it beats supporting a team that wants to win and increase payroll if need be by using the revenue the team generates and putting it back into the club. I guess it is better than watching your star shortstop walk away for nothing. Even better yet bieng about 4 games out at the trading deadline not making a mover than falling how many out? I am NOT A MET HATER it actually irks me how badly the team is run. Baseball is better for NY when both teams are playing well. The Mets will never turn it around with the Wilpons. John Gruber you are right on the money.
John Gruber August 22, 2012 at 08:01 pm
same goes for me, I'm not a met hater at all, I just hate how the team is currently run, although I do like Collins and Alderson, and the people who whine about a big payroll. ugh, they're in new york to, it's not like the yankee market is bigger and they tried winning with a big payroll and it didn't work so they are only insulting themselves by saying its easy to win with one
John K. Massaro August 22, 2012 at 10:12 pm
Yep, those names remind me of Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Alex Rodriguez, Chuck Knoblauch, Jason Giambi, Jason Grimsley, David Justice, Glenallen Hill, Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon, Gary Sheffield, Johnny Damon, Alfonso Soriano, Aaron Boone, Jose Contreras, Freddie Garcia, Bobby Abreu, Ritchie Sexson, Randy Velarde, Mike Stanton, Denny Neagle, Ricky Bones, Kevin Brown, Bobby Estalella, Darren Holmes, Dan Naulty, Ron Villone, Rondell White. All YANKEES listed on the Mitchell report. Keep in mind, Brian MacNamee was WORKING FOR THE YANKEES. And now we see a 38 year old past-his-prime shortstop suddenly have a resurgence of power & average when only 2 years ago his career was all but dead? Hmmm.....
Mac August 22, 2012 at 10:20 pm
Massaro wasn't radomski working with the mets? And wasn't radomskis the supplier to macnamee. You stated you preferred rooting for a clean team the mets are far from that even their clubhouse guy was dirty. The Mitchell report was a joke to begin with. Many of the players listd denied or radomski couldn't quite remember the details. Than through in the fact that no red sox players were listed and Mitchell was on the board of the red sox makes you wonder. Baseball isn't clean as it continues to prove. It must be frustrating being a met fan. It will hurt when wright leaves and you get nothing but once again wilpon doesn't think he is a star anyway.
John K. Massaro August 22, 2012 at 10:31 pm
NO, I said I never said anything about the Mets being a CLEAN team. You ASSUMED that's what I meant. And of course all Yankee fans think the Mitchell report was a joke. 90% of the players listed on it were Yankees...
Bottom line - A-Rod? CONFIRMED. Pettite? CONFIRMED. Canceco? CONFIRMED. Sheffield? CONFIRMED. How many Met players were CONFIRMED? And furthermore, if Wright leaves, no big deal. It won't frustrate me in the least. I don't own the team, I just watch the games. They won with him, they lost with him, they'll win & lose without him too. He's a tad over-rated anyway...
Mac August 22, 2012 at 11:34 pm
Yes John I guess I assumed it but you made the inference. Mets confirmed or admitted David segui, Malta, heredia, schowenweiss the lists can go on for both teams. Yes the Mitchell report was a joke conducted by a board member of the red sox. Why was it big Papi and manny left off? It was not an impartial report. That is a fact. How Selig commissioned an " independent" report by a member of the red sox is quite alarming also no brewers listed, a coincidence ?
If wright leaves you will not be disappointed? Or are you numb to all the losing be now? A real fan you are. " I just watch the games" I ask met fans is this your typical fan not caring if the team losses their best player who has been the heart and face of the franchise? I guess thisnisnwhynthe mets lose money and nobody goes to citified which is a great ballpark. I ask though what did the mets win with wright ? Because they will be worse without him.
John K. Massaro August 22, 2012 at 11:42 pm
The fact that Manny & Papi are left off that list is a bunch of BS. C'mon, just one look at either one of those guys should be enough. Papi's neck is bigger than his friggin head! Manny's been busted already, so that confirms that. But for there not to be one Red Sox player on that entire list? That's a joke with no punchline. I believe the list to be true to fact, but there are omissions. Has to be.
How convenient was it for Ryan Braun to get off the hook so easily? I'm a Mets & Jets fan, so I'm very used to disappointment. But to say that I would only root for them if they were winning, that don't make a very good fan... Mets will be worse without Wright? Isn't that what they said about Reyes? Where's the Marlins now as opposed to the Mets? And I'm sorry, but right now, RA Dickey is the face of the franchise...
Mac August 22, 2012 at 11:56 pm
Ra dickey wins the cy young would be a great story. Better than the no hitter. Ra may be a one year wonder and truly amazing story great person but wright is the face of the franchise. The question isn't where are the marlins who are almost as mismanaged as the mets maybe worse this year but would the mets be better with him. Gore search the Mitchell report and see how many players denied and how radomski changed his stories several times. The report is seriously flawed. No red sox what a joke. Even more how come so many teams had none? Mitchell focused on the radomski Mac connection which implicated many ny players.
At least you root when they are losing. I happen to love citified.
John K. Massaro August 23, 2012 at 12:05 am
RA Dickey is the story of the year. All but left for dead by every other team, Sandy gives him a shot. In line to win 18 games this year easily. I love a good re-claim project...
Marlins are a perfect example of spending a lot of good money on bad players. (Or the Omar Minaya syndrome, as I like to call it) All the money in the world won't buy you team chemistry...
John Gruber August 23, 2012 at 04:11 pm
If you think Jeter is on PED's your as dumb as Skip Bayless. The guy hits 12 home runs and all of a sudden he's using something? come on. The guy had an MVP type season barely 2 years ago. and hitting .270 the following isn't considered "dead", god forbid an aging shortstop have a down year. Seriously, don't bring Jeter up in this conversation, you just throw any credibility you have out the window
John Gruber August 23, 2012 at 04:18 pm
yea all yankees and no red sox on that mitchell report. you think it was a coincidence that ramierez or Ortiz wasn't mentioned? No one even heard of Ortiz when he was with the Twins till he came to Boston whacking 40 HRs a season and the fact that he wasn't even mentioned just proves the unreliability of that report. Also, Melky was NOT using with the yankees, his numbers will back that up.
John Gruber August 23, 2012 at 04:20 pm
and during that steroid era, pitchers and hitters alike were using those PED's all throughout baseball so it's not like one team was better than another in that regard, it was used by most players on most (if not all) teams

Natalie. I am so sorry to read this. I too have a little 5 yr. old dog who I love desperately...Read More and I feel your pain. There is another website for an organization that does an amazing job finding lost pets. It's LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM There is a small fee, but they get signs up all over the area and have a phone system set up where everyone in the area of where she was lost gets a PHONE CALL ALERT message to watch for Molly. They leave a phone number and their website address so if anyone has seen her or has her they know where to call. Great system! Check it out! I've never used them, but I HAVE received calls myself recently on 2 separate lost dogs and I've seen the many photos they hung up in my area in Levittown for dogs lost within a few miles of this area. In other words, they DO what they say they will do to help find Molly. Just want you to know what is out there to help you bring Molly home. My grandkids go to school around Grand and Camp Ave. We'll be watching for her! God Bless and good luck! I'm sure she will be returned to you real soon!!
