Weinman's Hardware Celebrates 91st Anniversary

The business opened on Bedford Avenue on Aug. 26, 1922.

Roy Weinman, owner of Weinman's Hardware, said that he had a number fond memories during his many years working in the store.

"We went through a lot of changes," he said. "I remember the years when the big stores opened around us, but we found that there was still a place for us here and our customers came back."

Monday makes 91 years that Weinman's Hardware has been in Bellmore.

"I've had a lot of fun and enjoyed going trough a lot of different phases,"the  88-year-old North Bellmore resident said.

Weinman's Hardware was first owned by Weinman's father, Meyer Weinman, who opened the store across the street from its current location in 1922.

"My father and mother moved from New York City to Bellmore," Weinman said. "When they opened the store, they lived in the back of it with my sister, Marilyn, and sold merchandise in front of it."

Weinman said that the business offered different products back then.

"It was more of a general store," he said. "It sold pottery, dishes, farm supplies, appliances and even refrigerators."

Two years after the store opened, Weinman was born. After serving in World War II, he took partial ownership of the store. In the late 50s, he took full ownership after his father started suffering from health problems.

In 1935, the business moved to its current location at 106 Bedford Ave.

On a recent warm morning, Weinman and his son, David, were helping customers in the store.

"We hope my son takes it over next," Weinman smiled.

He said that after all these years, he still loves his job.

"I am still enjoying myself in this store," Weinman said. "This is a job where you figure out what customers what and what they need."
