Long Island's first Walmart Market grocery store will open sometime in July of 2013, Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes announced at the Levittown Property Owner's Association meeting.

The store, scheduled to replace the old Walbaum's on Hempstead Tpke. in the Levittown Mews shopping center, is currently under construction. A permit was issued on July 2 for work to be done on the interior alterations and building facade, with bulldozers and construction machines currently on location.

The market is about one-third the size of a typical supercenter and the store will employ about 95 people and create about 100 new construction jobs, according to Steven V. Restivo, Senior Director of Community Affairs for Walmart.

The first Walmart Market opened in 1998 and there are currently 215 locations nationwide.
