Local Learning Centers Can Help Students Get 'Back to School'

A list of local tutors that will give your child the necessary extra help.

With roughly one month left until the start of a new school year, students throughout the area should be looking to get a jump on their work.

It's never easy for students to start off a school year by falling behind. Luckily there are several professional learning centers in the area to help students perfect their work outside of the classroom.

JEI Learning Centers

According to their website, "JEI Learning Centers was founded in South Korea by Sung Hoon Park, a visionary educator and entrepreneur with an innovative idea. In 1981, Mr. Park and a team of JEI researchers developed the JEI-Self Learning Method. The JEI Self-Learning Method is a self-paced, individualized program that helps the student master mathematical and language concepts in small, easy-to- follow steps."

JEI Learning Centers can be found at the following locations:

  • Merrick-Bellmore; 2583 Merrick Road, Bellmore (FasTracKids)
  • Herricks-Williston Park; 312 Hillside Ave., Williston Park

Kumon

Not all tutoring services concentrate on entrance exams. Kumon Math and Reading Centers concentrate on improving academic skills of students from pre-school to 12th grade.

Kumon learning centers can be found at the following locations:

  • 131 Jericho Tpke., Suite A, Mineola
  • 1586 Broadway, Hewlett
  • 2072 Front St., East Meadow
  • 1174 Willis Ave., Albertson
  • 3060 L Hempstead Tpke., Levittown

NY PrepTutors

This company has offices in Great Neck and tutoring locations in the Merrick Library. Like other companies, it helps with high school and college  entrance exams, but owner Hooman Dilmanian, says that NY PrepTutors doesn't lock you into an agreement for tutors. "A lot of tutoring services require a contract," he said. "They don't give you the option of paying as you go along." For more information on their programs, go to the NY PrepTutors website.

Sylvan Learning Center

Sylvan Learning Center Sylvan offers a variety of programs for children in elementary school to students in older grades. Get assistance in subjects or even test and college preparation. All of the staff are certified and trained, according to Sylvan’s website. Sylvan has an office in Levittown, at 3601 Hempstead Tpke.

A bit of a surprise considering kids come home with a supply list a mile long (and average $40-$75).
