Got Cupcakes? is a popular, family-run purveyor of confectionery goodness situated right on Bedford Avenue in the heart of the Bellmore shopping district.
Known as much for her delicious, decadent cupcakes covering a wide range of flavors as she is for her shop’s which just held its second annual event, owner Nancy Moniodes recently spoke to Patch about her wonderful business and the joy it gives her everyday.
Tell us how Got Cupcakes? got its start.
The business started with my daughter’s Sweet 16. We wanted to start something together as a family, and something close to home, but who knew we’d start something really close to home, here in Bellmore, our very own town.
Why cupcakes?
Cupcakes, because of portion control and the variety; people can pick and choose an assortment of things. They don’t just have to choose just one flavor, or just one kind. People can make it colorful, playful, and fun!
Tell us about your background in the baking biz.
I started in the restaurant business, and I’ve always liked sweets better than actual food...and I still do. I really do like my sugar. I try to eat as much as possible...it makes me smile and laugh all the time.
But I also see how people get when they come in and they look at the cupcakes...especially little kids. I love to be able to have a videotape going to capture the kids going “Ooh” and “Ahh” when they’re looking at all the different cupcakes. The young and old alike do that, actually.
What sets Got Cupcakes? apart from other cupcake joints?
I truly, truly try as much as possible to treat people like family, and I try to be as friendly as possibly and make them feel comfortable. I want to make them want to try our cupcakes the first time around, and I really want to make them want to come back, have us do their party, recommend us to friends, and really want to come back and have them again.
You’re known far and wide throughout the Bellmores and beyond for your annual Cupcake Eating contest. Is that something you see yourself continuing to do for the foreseeable future?
Absolutely. The community seems to love it, and we have a great time doing it, so I see us doing the contest for years to come. It’s just part of what we believe- that you should give back to your community. We do it in other ways as well, whenever someone comes to us to help out with a charity we never say "No." We’ll always donate a dozen cupcakes or two for auctions to help those in need.
What do you like about owning a business in Bellmore?
I love the town. The people are friendly, everybody’s good to each other, it has a great school system, and everything’s so close. You don’t have to go too far for anything. It’s just a great place to live.
