LIPA: Restoration Nine Days Away

Editor's Note: This article was written and submitted by Joe Dowd.

A top official with the Long Island Power Authority said Friday it will take at least until next weekend to restore power to most of the communities it serves.

That estimate does not include portions of Long Island that were ravaged by flooding or other catastrophic damage left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Nicholas Lizanich, vice president of operations for LIPA, said the utility is facing an unprecedented disaster – twice the impact of last year's Hurricane Irene. He added that LIPA has restored service to about half its customers.

The interview came on the same day Gov. Andrew Cuomo repeated a pointed warning to the power companies. Cuomo said utilities could be fined or lose their license to operate if they are not responsive to their customers.

LIPA has slightly more than 1 million customers.

"We've reached the halfway point and are doing well in that regard," Lizanich said.
Another 520,000 households – more than 1 million people – remain without power to their homes and businesses. Power will be restored incrementally as the work progresses.

But Lizanich could not be more specific about which areas will be powered-up next because crews are working to restore distribution points along the electrical grid first.

Also, it will take much longer to restore power to about 100,000 customers living in flood damaged areas along the South Shore, including the Rockaways and communities facing the Great South Bay.

LIPA normally operates with about 500 utility workers, but out-of-state crews have come in to lend a hand, pumping the total number working to restore power to about 3,000. Another 2,000 are expected to join the workforce in the coming days.

Some crews and their trucks are being flown in from California, Arizona, Texas and Florida via C-130 cargo planes arriving at East Coast Air Force bases. The hurricane damaged vast stretches of Atlantic seaboard, and utility crews are in demand for 1,000 miles, he said.

Gov. Cuomo, at a wide ranging press conference this morning in New York, demanded timely results from LIPA and the other utilities.

"I will hold them accountable for their performance," Cuomo said. "I'm going to remind them of that every day – in fact, twice a day – that I will hold them accountable."

LIPA's goal is for everyone to a generator because they receive a cut from all these generators being sold. Then we will complain when we lose power again. Great job LIPA

Everyone feels sorry for the people who losst everything but our concern right now is about an electric company that cannot do their job. If youwant a philosophic discussion about our comparitive issues than of course you are right. But that is not what we are griping about. We want our electric to go back on. Some people need it for convenience and some need it for their health. In any event we are entitled to it. We pay for it. Last year LIPA raised our rates because of the last hurricane and they are going to do that again. And wednesday when we get the next storm our lights will go out again. That is an issue my friend and we have every right to complain about it. If I trip over a sidewalk defect and break my arm, don't tell me I am lucky since I did not fracture my skull like some other people did.
Susan Britt November 6, 2012 at 04:18 am
Lets make it clear that no one is blaming these brave guys on the trucks doing the best they can do, This is a management issue pure and simple. They failed again to do they simplest job of assessing the needs for an upcoming storm. People are without power and many are suffering. Yes, many people lost their homes and they have our prayers but many of us are lucky this go round but are having provlems getting to work, driving to family, getting food, cooking food and trying to get through the day. These complaints should get the respect they deserve just as LIPA management should get what they deserve.
Elle917 November 6, 2012 at 04:53 am
Agreed, the buck stops with LIPA management. The utility workers are only following orders from management.
This evening, I listened to the interim CEO, Michael D. Hervey speak on Ch 12 today and was so disappointed. He basically danced around the questions, took NO responsibility for lack of planning and preparation, was actually blaming his own website for delays in updates and said, "I will TRY to get to everyone this week". What??? "Try", did he really say "try"? What kind of a CEO is this? There is NO try in a crisis, there is only DO. He should have said, I will DO everything I can to get to everyone. This was not reassuring to me. Perhaps LIPA management is in over the heads in managing this utility and new management is needed. The sooner the better.

Iv been without power for 8 days and have an asthmatic child. There are areas in west Hempstead that have power but my block does not. It's fustrating to see the house on the corner with power for 5 days while me and my kids freez. I can not leave my home I also have pets. I have shuffled my kids back and forth to queens to my mom but I am using all my gas. All I want is my lights back on.
Susan Britt November 6, 2012 at 04:06 pm
What a strange comparison.
Susan Britt November 6, 2012 at 04:12 pm
John..I think YOU need a grip. Not everyone can have a generator and of course everyone feels good to be alive. People are unhappy with LIPA and they have a right to complain. And NO...not on government aid....and even if they were...it is none of your business...they can complain too...so go get yourself some Valium.

I have a family member working there Cutting Trees he is in the pic. They cannot cut anything untill the power company says its ok ,he told me one person stated not to cut tree down because it was very old ? He really doesnt want to be there (would rather be back in Mo .with is family. But feel lucky when in in the flood of1993 they made us move (out of the flood zone)The govt.could be saying you cannot rebuild so close to the sea(as they told us after the flood). As for the power company that B.S. is everywhere. There is what 7.5 million people in that area Start puting out pettions get somthing on the ballot.Power needs restored that is all that matters right now Union or non-Union(that doesnt matter right now)Dont bash the workers they are doing what they are told to do! Think about this we are all in this together I live 1000 miles away and it is affecting me too (Family, and tax dollars just as the flood in 93 ,we got your tax dollars then)So I pray for everyone affected .Just take care of each other for now And work on the power company later (Its not the worker its the system.)

Does anybody know when the murdering and actual killing will begin? How long is it going to take to get to that point? I would imagine soon if our basic human needs are continuously being denied! Every day without power, I meditate, pray, and wish with every fiber of my being for the expiration of a few human lives in order to save thousands. Even in the freezing temperatures with no heat, praying for this is helping to keep me very warm. Odd...but yet, understandable.

If the union workers were to put underground electric lines, then of course it would cost to much. We would have to pay for there retirement, health insurance, and high wages. If a non union company was to install underground electric, then it would be half the cost!!! It doesn't take a dummy to figure that out!!! And if a non union company were to get the contract to do the work then the union THUGS would do some very bad things to the workers and there loved ones. This is 2012. So just forget about the underground electric and deal with the power going out, or move inland.
JOE November 6, 2012 at 11:43 pm
uNION THUGS, Hey john you are a peice of garbage to hide behind a user name and trash union workers . Have some balls and tell everybody your name and what you do for a living you peice of garbage . Union workers who are skilled tradesman. Do you really want unskilled people working on a utility line ?? what do you mean ? people don't deserve health insurance , a retirement , or decent wages. . People like you are ruining this country with you ignorance and selfish short sighted clueless brain
Nassau Taxpayer November 7, 2012 at 12:02 am
Too bad all the linemen from Alabama and Indiana haven't been able to vote -- since they're here helping LIPA.
daphnesmom November 7, 2012 at 12:38 am
Apparently some out of state workers don't even want to come back to LI because they've been treated so poorly and had to deal with so many obnoxious residents. We should be thanking them, not criticizing them for taking too long - I'm sure they're doing the best they can. They are doing dangerous work and they deserve 8 hours of rest...how many of us work 16 hour days? While it's frustrating not to have power, many of us in this area are lucky to have homes, unlike those in Long Beach, Staten Island, and the like. Go spend time with your families and have some meaningful conversations instead of complaining to strangers online. I'm not happy to have been without power for a week, and I'm more than happy to support reforming LIPA, but cut the workers a break...and help out people in greater need.
John November 7, 2012 at 01:00 am
Hi: Joe
What are you saying? If someone's not in the union then there not skilled tradesmen? Everyone needs health ins., retirement and decent wages! If everyone was to get all that then the price of everything would be triple of what your paying now! I bet when you go shopping for some company to replace your roof on your house that you don't hire a union company because there to expensive. LOL. you hire the non union!!! I see your user name isn't showing your name and address. Your such a hypocrite!!!! Joe who? From where? LMFAO. I'm a skilled tradesmen and have done pretty good with out my gang of THUGS backing be!!!!! Your just another bum that needs to join a gang because your to stupid to make it on your own! And I help pay your health ins. and retierment every day along with alot of other non union workers! What dose the union workers do for the non union workers????? Not a friggin thing. Enjoy yourself you clueless, ignorant, selfish crook!!!!!!
John November 7, 2012 at 01:11 am
Also JOE. I don't recall saying anyone doesn't deserve health insurance. Where did you come up with that? Your just another idiot trying to defend him or herself with out any grounds to stand on. Your all union bums that are making this country what's its becoming! Good luck Mr.

@John, the greatest generation, upon returning from the just war, WWII, came home and drove union membership into the 60% range. You sir cannot hold a candle to that generation, and none of us can call them cowards. If it were not for men like that you would be subjugated to sweatshop conditions. If you think for one minute that you have not benefited from union labor, perhaps you should ply your trade in Zaire.
John November 7, 2012 at 02:54 pm
<JOE> You don't even know me! How can you say your a better craftsmen then me?LOL. Man, is that stupid to say! I'm guessing your in your mid 20's and still need more time to grow up? And Walter, I don't even know what Zaire is! I made my point in this conversation and I feel I got the point across! I dont need to wasth anymore of my time with self centered souls from the scum of N.J. (The A hole part of N.Y.) your both lower then whale crap hanging out with the lawyers from hell! Enjoy your earnings from the wallets of hard working non union people of this country. Scum balls from hell !!!!!!!!
Simon November 7, 2012 at 08:28 pm
Where is our fearless leader Ed Mangano giving us updates regarding LIPA? It is obvious that you do not care abiut the ppl that voted for you. Today is day 9 without power and according to this blog, today is the day that LIPA is supposedly restoring power to the rest of us. If I am not mistaken LIPA said they will have 90% restored. It is time to get rid of Mangano and all of LIPA and its monopoly. LIPA cannot handle Nassau and Suffolk. We need a selection of numerous utility companies not just LIPA.
Jon L November 9, 2012 at 05:08 pm
@rosie: I know you've been going into every thread and criticized all of the posters in here who've lost their power for 11 days while kissing the fannies of the workers and LIPA. Right now why in the world should anyone who's been without heat for 11 days in freezing temperatures by so sympathetic to LIPA and the utility crews who've neglected them? I get the feeling you probably got your power restored early on; or never lost it in the first place. How about saving some of that sympathy you've demonstrated for the actual victims of the Hurricane and Nor'easter instead of those getting paid for doing their job, ok?
Susan Britt November 9, 2012 at 05:19 pm
Agreed Simon. I have power now but I cannot enjoy it unless everyone gets power. I feel for the people who are cold and unable to get out of their homes. I feel for the people who lost their businesses. I cannot switch on the light without thinking of them and I am as angry as if it were my problem too. I lived without electric for 8 days and it infuriated me. All over this country there are places that get bad weather and they all know what to do except LIPA. Europe is laughing at us on their TV programs. Buffalo gets snow early in the year and they are giant storms. They know what to do. We get snow and we are incapacitated. WTF?
Susan Britt November 9, 2012 at 05:21 pm
Agreed tm...the best and worst of us comes out in these situations. But he does that on a lot of posts.
Elle917 November 10, 2012 at 04:15 pm
From my view, LIPA needs management with vision, principles, intelligence and talent. Not people like CEO Michael Hervey who hide behind excuses, ignore customer needs and lack the skills to do advanced preparedness and response for future crises like Sandy.
To change things at LIPA, voice your opinions now by calling or writing to your local and state officials. These officials can't help you if you don't make them aware of the magnitude of your problems with LIPA. To hold LIPA accountable, you can also sign the petition at: http://www.signon.org/sign/hold-lipa-accountable?source=homepage Long Islanders deserve better LIPA management - remember, you are paying for these services that you are not getting after days in the dark. Don't be silent on this issue, speak out to the right people and be heard!

Natalie. I am so sorry to read this. I too have a little 5 yr. old dog who I love desperately...Read More and I feel your pain. There is another website for an organization that does an amazing job finding lost pets. It's LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM There is a small fee, but they get signs up all over the area and have a phone system set up where everyone in the area of where she was lost gets a PHONE CALL ALERT message to watch for Molly. They leave a phone number and their website address so if anyone has seen her or has her they know where to call. Great system! Check it out! I've never used them, but I HAVE received calls myself recently on 2 separate lost dogs and I've seen the many photos they hung up in my area in Levittown for dogs lost within a few miles of this area. In other words, they DO what they say they will do to help find Molly. Just want you to know what is out there to help you bring Molly home. My grandkids go to school around Grand and Camp Ave. We'll be watching for her! God Bless and good luck! I'm sure she will be returned to you real soon!!
