Weird News: Baldwin Brother Pays Back Taxes

Not-so-everyday headlines from around the area.

Actor and Massapequa native Stephen Baldwin appeared in court Friday and paid $100,000 owed to the state in back taxes, according to the New York State Tax Department.

Baldwin, 47, now lives in Upper Grandview and appeared before a judge in Rockland County Friday morning and presented a certified check, part of $343,068 he owes in back personal income taxes, reported the state.

Baldwin was arrested in December and arraigned on one count of repeated failure to file personal income tax returns, which is a Class E felony, according to the report. He owed a total of $300,000, including penalties and interests, they said.

Baldwin pleaded guilty to the charge in March and agreed to pay an additional $300,000 by his March 2014 sentencing, reported the state. He will appear in court again on Jan. 10.

“It shows that, regardless of a person’s occupation or financial situation, all New Yorkers must meet their obligation to pay their fair share of income taxes in a timely manner," said Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Thomas Mattox.

According to NewsdayBaldwin discovered his returns had not been filed two years ago when he was informed he was under investigation.

"[Baldwin] has promised this will not happen again," his attorneyreportedly said.
