For the protection of motorists, travel lanes will be closed at night on the Southern State Parkway between Dec. 17-20.
Two travel lanes in each direction will be closed each night between Merrick Avenue (Exit 24) and Grand Avenue (Exit 20) in the westbound direction between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and in the eastbound direction between 12-6 a.m. Like Bellmore Patch on Facebook by clicking here.
These closures are needed to erect scaffolding at the Meadowbrook Road, Park Avenue and Hempstead-Franklin Avenue bridges over the Southern State Parkway in order to replace the bridge parapet walls. This bridge maintenance repair work will help assure the longevity of these aging concrete arch bridges and will help maintain the safety of the approximately 190,000 passenger vehicles that use this section of the SSP each day.
Drivers are urged to use alternate routes such as Hempstead Turnpike or Sunrise Highway or they will experience delays. As with most road work, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.
Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these travel lane closures. Motorists are being warned in advance of these closures via portable and overhead INFORM electronic message signs.
Drivers are reminded of the Move-Over Law that includes all hazard vehicles with amber lights such as tow trucks and construction vehicles. On parkways and other major highways with multiple lanes, drivers must move to a travel lane away from a vehicle displaying amber, red, white or blue flashing lights, or slow down.
Violators face moving violation fines and points on their drivers’ licenses. Drivers should also be aware that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
