Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening in across Nassau County with a threat of torrential rain, damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, cloud to ground lightening and large hail, according to the National Weather Service. Flash flooding is also possible.
The severe heat and humidity has created a very unstable atmosphere, according to the National Weather Service. The thunderstorms are expected to reach New York City and coastal locations between 2-4 p.m. before moving offshore by early evening.
Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. The storms could produce 1 to 2 inches of rainfall in a short amount of time, according to the National Weather Service.
A heat advisory for northern and southern Nassau remains in effect until 6 p.m. A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity makes it feel like 100 to 104 degrees for two consecutive hours.
