American Red Cross Offers Thanks to Community

Organization shows gratitude to those who volunteered during Hurricane Irene and other storms.

The following is from John Miller, CEO of American Red Cross on Long Island:

During this season of hope and thanksgiving, the American Red Cross on Long Island reflects on the generosity of those who helped us bring comfort and assistance to our neighbors in need this year.

We owe a huge measure of gratitude to our partners and donors who have shown a deep commitment to the mission of the American Red Cross. We owe an equal measure of thanks to our thousands of dedicated volunteers. Their tireless work makes it possible for us to respond to disasters throughout our area.

This past year was marked by our responses to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, which wrecked havoc throughout our area, displacing tens of thousands of residents. Additionally, the Red Cross responded to hundreds of local home fires, floods and storms, including the recent October snowstorm, which left record numbers of people isolated and without power to our north.

In every instance, the Red Cross was there with comfort and caring: meals, blankets, safe shelter and emotional support to help those affected get back on their feet.

We also sent dozens of Long Island relief workers to spring floods and tornadoes across eight states and supported relief efforts for the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

We don’t know what 2012 will bring, but what is certain is that we will continue to provide compassionate assistance wherever and whenever it is needed, throughout the year.

Thank you again to all those who continue to make our humanitarian work possible.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

John Miller
