#99: Lodge-Like Fireside Family Dining

Chill out and warm up at the Oak Chalet.

Need to chill out -- and warm up -- during this harsh winter? A popular old-style Bellmore eatery offers a cozy lodge-like atmosphere, replete with a roaring fireplace, where you can do just that -- the Oak Chalet.

A longstanding tradition among many Long Islanders, this unusual Bellmore restaurant just might be the place for younger diners to step back in time and tradition.

Touted as “a taste of Bavaria” and offering “Goulash Tuesday Specials,” this family-owned Continental-German restaurant (operated by the former owners of the now defunct Sunrise Village Restaurant, a Bellmore legend) features a chalet-like dining room decorated with mounted animals, dark wood and stone, and boasting a vaulted wood-paneled ceiling and dramatic bay windows. At times, there are even live entertainers in lederhosen!

The floor-to-ceiling roaring brick fireplace, with authentic ‘bier’ steins on its imposing mantle, add to a uniquely European lodge-like setting in which to eat, drink (Hofbräu-München on tap) and be merry…and, right now this winter, to warm up!

Come back here next Tuesday for idea #98!
