Three Judge panel approves map that will take away northern part of lawmaker's district.
Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford, will see his Congressional district change considerably under a new map that has been approved by a three-judge Federal Court panel. The judges adopted a map drawn by lower court judge Roanne Mann a week ago after state lawmakers did not come up with a redistricting plan that reflects the results of the 2010 census. "Like the census that triggers it, this argument is now raised in federal courts at predictable 10-year intervals," the judges wrote in their decision Monday, addressing the lawsuit by voters who argued that the state was doing harm to their right to participate in upcoming elections. Denenberg will serve another two years in office after being elected for a seventh term.
Democrat Dave Denenberg won his re-election Tuesday against Republican challenger Dr. Fred Jones for a seat representing the 19th Legislative District. Denenberg captured more than 73 percent of the vote against the non-incumbent, Jones. Jones told Patch that although he did not come out the victor, he wanted to thank all of the people that worked hard on his campaign. "I also hope that the new legislator will see that we have to make some changes in the county," Jones added. Denenberg did not respond to Patch's request for a comment as of press time. Norma Gonsalves, R-East Meadow, has been reelected as legislator of Nassau County's 13th District, according to unofficial results from the Nassau County Board of Elections. With 100 percent of districts reporting, Gonsalves received 5,883 votes, while Patricia Maher, D-East Meadow, obtained 4,709 votes and Joseph Spinola, WF-East Meadow, garnered 741 votes. "I had faith in the voters, and they had faith in me," Gonsalves said. "They thought I deserved another term to carry on the work that I have done over the past 14 years." Town says no medication information is included on the ID cards.
Hempstead Town officials responded Monday afternoon to claims made by Steve Anchin, the Democratic candidate for Hempstead Town Clerk, about the town's senior ID program. The town, along with Town Clerk Mark Bonilla, announced in early October that it had begun offering free identification cards for senior citizens. Last week, Anchin claimed that the ID cards were "dangerous" due to ever-changing medication and prescription information. But the Town of Hempstead responded Monday by saying that no such information exists on the ID cards, specifically for that reason. GOP head Joe Mondello introduced the crowd to all of the candidates in supervisor, legislator, judge and council races.
Thursday night was rally night for the Republicans running for positions in County and Town governments across Nassau. The rally took place at Levittown Hall in Hicksville. GOP chair Joseph Mondello introduced the candidates to the Republican constituents. Many of the candidates, as well as Republican leaders not up for election, spoke in an effort to rally their supporters in an effort to get a significant turnout for Tuesday's elections.
