As a college professor, we know that many of the students are not "adults" but LEGALLY we…Read More are not allowed to discuss the student with the parent. We know that it is the parent that is most often paying for college, but without a signed letter of consent. signed by both the parent and the student, we are LEGALLY NOT ALLOWED to discuss the student with the parent....no matter how much we want to.

I completely agree with you...and that's my point. Our system does define adulthood by age (and too…Read More young of an age in my opinion) when it shouldn't be. And personally, I think talking on your cell phone or texting while driving should be an immediate loss of license.

CW, you want Eddie to stay on topic? He couldn't even stay on topic with respect to the post he…Read More rants about in every other post. As I recall, the post in question dealt with the issue of carrying concealed weapons on campus. http://syosset.patch.com/groups/the-college-whisperer/p/guns-dont-kill-college-students-- Eddie has turned this into a tirade about Second Amendment rights.
At the same time, he disparages women, liberals, and anyone else who happens to disagree with his distorted point of view, resorting to ad hominem attacks and misogynistic one-liners such as, "Just another freedom-grabbing liberal woman."
This guy is a Neanderthal (with profound apologies to every Neanderthal that ever roamed God's green earth). I'd like to know what college had the audacity to award Eddie, king of the great thinkers, a degree. They should be sued for malpractice!
BTW, Eddie, 22 states, including New York, ban concealed carry on campus. http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/educ/guns-on-campus-overview.aspx [Must be those "freedom grabbing liberal women" in the state legislatures!]
And recently (Eddie, take note), the Supreme Court of the United States declined to hear a case challenging NY's handgun law, which requires applicants to demonstrate a special need for self-protection to get a license to carry a concealed handgun in public. http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2013/04/15/supreme-court-wont-hear-challenge-to-n-y-s-concealed-carry-law/ The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in November 2012 affirmed a U.S. district court ruling that the so-called “proper cause” statute was “entirely consistent” with the Second Amendment.
Looks like the highest court in the land falls into your "freedom grabbing" theory, Eddie. Must be those liberal women Associate Justices!
Lastly (and this is just my opinion), knowing that someone with Eddie's mindset would be issued a gun permit, and allowed to carry a gun on a college campus, no less, is not only frightening. It clearly demonstrates the need for common sense measures to prevent gun violence, and stricter enforcement of gun control laws already on the books.

My daughter's school spent a ridiculous amount of time prepping the third grade for these tests...…Read More time that would have been far better spent LEARNING ACTUAL CURRICULUM. In addition, my daughter (who is in her school's gifted and talented program) suffered loss of sleep and anxiety over the "what ifs" of "not passing" these tests. Apparently the teacher practically terrorized the class with scenarios of remedial reading and tutors if the kids did not do well. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much pressure, WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much time away from curriculum, and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much emphasis on these tests.

I second BD's suggestion about using KeePass, which is . It's a great way to store passwords…Read More securely. You set it up with a master password that you can enter with an on-screen keyboard to avoid key-loggers designed to steal passwords, and it can be installed on a USB "thumb drive", so you can take it with you when you travel.
When you record one of your passwords, it indicates how strong your password is.
Storing your passwords in a notebook is handy, but how secure is a notebook in case of a burglary, fire, water damage or just loss?

To go a step further, install Dropbox on each device you use (including smartphones) and place the KeePass database within a DropBox folder and your passwords will be accessible everywhere. KeePass can also generate highly secure passwords for you, then the only password you'll need to remember is the one to access KeePass.

While reasonable minds may differ, Jim, most college financial aid pros shudder at the thought of…Read More life insurance as college fund, favoring other savings vehicles, including tax-favored 529 Plans. http://www.clarkhoward.com/news/clark-howard/insurance/529-plans-trump-life-insurance-policies-pay-colleg/nFSzW/
Or, as Suze Orman would say, when asked about life insurance to pay for college, “Are you kidding me?” http://youtu.be/VdmzHJWIELc
Mark Kantrowitz of finaid.org similarly pans life insurance contracts as a means to save for college. http://www.kiplinger.com/article/college/T042-C000-S002-life-insurance-not-a-great-option-to-save-for-coll.html
And Lynn O’Shaughnessy of The College Solution and CBS Money Watch goes a step further. “There are many serious consequences for the widespread lack of knowledge about college financial issues in this country. One of them is the proliferation of snake oil salesmen. Some so-called financial professionals, mostly guys selling insurance, think the solution to every family’s college funding problem is to buy an annuity or a life insurance policy.” http://www.thecollegesolution.com/avoiding-college-snake-oil-salesmen/ She’s right on the money when she says, “The best way to shrink your college costs is to become an empowered consumer by educating yourself. And stay away from snake oil salesmen!”
There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to saving (and paying) for college, just as there is no one-size-fits-all for choosing a college. What is good for the goose may not necessarily be best for the gander. Same can be said for using life insurance as your college savings plan. The smart money, it would seem, is on 529s! http://www.smartmoney.com/plan/insurance/insurers-target-college-savers-1319507624459/
Thanks for your comments, Jim. And keep up the fantastic work you do at Access College Foundation. http://www.accesscollege.org/

Slightly biased perspective!!!
No mention of the fact that 529s have been re-defined by Congress as…Read More a student asset, a parent asset, not an asset at all, and now back to a parent asset.
So, use the assessable asset or life insurance, properly funded, which is not assessed.
We won't even go into the fees or the over-aggressive age-based portfolios.
With a guaranteed life policy you don't have to worry about the stock market taking your college savings!

Here's how you can tell how accurate an estimate from a college's net price calculator is: if it…Read More asks 30 to 40 questions (financial and academic) then your aid eligibility, net price and out-of-pocket cost estimates will be accurate. And these are easy and fast to use - taking 10 to 12 minutes to answer. About 1,500 colleges posted sophisticated NPCs that are based on current costs and use algorithms to reliable create personalized estimates. Unfortunately, the majority of post-secondary schools built their NPCs on a federal template that is based on two-year-old cost information, doesn't follow the federal formula for estimating need, and uses need questions to estimate merit aid. NPCs based on the federal template ask 12 or fewer questions.
