Stop & Shop Closed for Major Renovation

Local supermarket to reopen in early August.

The Super Stop & Shop supermarket on Jerusalem Avenue in North Bellmore closed Monday night temporarily for a major renovation. The pharmacy will remain open during construction.

"There will be new shelves, new refrigerators, a new bakery department, a new produce department, and a new seafood service department," store manager Bruce Detzel explained. There will be a greater variety of foods and an expanded natural and organic food area, he added.

"The expansion of departments will be all internal," Detzel said. No structural expansion or additional parking is planned. Contrary to some reports, there is no Starbucks, café or interior eatery area included in the plans.

When asked why the changes to the store were being made, Detzel said, "We've been here for 10 years and owe it to the community to do this."

The supermarket will reopen sometime between Aug. 6-13, the store manager said, depending upon how fast the renovations go. Circulars announcing the specific date will be mailed to residents' homes, he added.

During the overhaul, residents may wish to shop at other local grocers, such as King Kullen on Sunrise Highway, Bellmore Fresh on Newbridge Road or Natural Health Farm on Jerusalem Avenue.

While construction is underway, the store's employees and department managers are being assigned temporarily to other Stop & Shop locations nearby, including Merrick (2160 South Merrick Mall), East Meadow (2525 Hempstead Tpke.) and Levittown (3750 Hempstead Tpke.)

"We look forward to coming back in August and serving our customers again," Detzel said.

Founded in 1914 as the Economy Grocery Stores Company in Somerville, MA, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company currently operates 375 stores in seven states. In 1996, the company was acquired by Ahold, one of the largest food retailers in the world.
