Six Bellmore Girl Scouts Receive Gold Awards

The award is the highest honor in Girl Scouting.

Six Bellmore Girl Scouts received the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, on Friday night.

Julie Fithian, Kelly O'Leary and Alexa Telano of Troop 911 and Allison Rattoballi, Jacqueline Nunez and Courtney Wright of Troop 924 were honored at a ceremony held at the Merrick Golf Clubhouse.

The Gold Award symbolizes accomplishments in the areas of leadership, community service, career planning and personal development. To attain this award, each girl must first earn her Leadership Award, Gold Career Award and Challenge Award. She can then begin her Gold Award project.

Fithian's project, "Be Aware About Wildlife; There is a Baby Animal in My Backyard, What Do I Do," explains the different types of wildlife, diseases and fun facts on the many wild animals on Long Island.

O'Leary conducted a series of educational workshops on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. She that that by the age of 13 she was drinking and that she lost a close friend due to alcohol abuse.

"I did not choose to base my project on this topic because it has become a large issue in today's society, but more so because there has been numerous events in my life that has inspired me to do so," she said.

Telano cleaned up a local park as well put up signs about the dangers of pollution.

Rattoballi created Girl Scout geocaches to help clean the environment.

Nunez and Wright worked together and constructed a three-section compost bin.
