Judith Salerno Inducted into Hall of Fame

Judith Salerno, an administrator in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and an adjunct faculty member at Hofstra University, has been inducted into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, according to Hofstra's website.

Salerno is one of seven member of the 2012 class. A major benefactor of the Hofstra softball program, Salerno also serves as an adjunct assistant professor of health professions and kinesiology at the university.

"Judy has been an enthusiastic supporter of Hofstra softball for many years," Hofstra Head Coach Bill Edwards said. "Having someone of her stature as part of our program speaks volumes of her commitment to Hofstra softball and women's athletics in general. We congratulate her on another prestigious and well-deserved award."

Salerno began her career teaching middle school physical education in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District in 1967, following a year in the Baldwin School District. She was the athletic coordinator at Merrick Avenue Middle School from 1981-99. In 1974, she was the first woman to chair the NYSPHSAA Modified Committee, where she continues to serve in that position. 

Her work facilitated many important changes regarding practice requirements, extending a playing time pilot program and modifying rules. She also served an important role as the Section VIII junior high school division chairperson from 1974-75 and the Seciton VIII modified athletic council from 1987-93. She was also the Seciton VIII chair for modified volleyball, boy's tennis and girls' tennis from 1974 into the 1990's.

Salerno earned her Bachelor's Degree in physical education from Adelphi University in 1966 and a Master's degree in special education from Hofstra in 1970. She is a graduate of New Rochelle High School.
