Community Parent Center to Host Seminar on Prescription Drug Abuse

The substance abuse awareness program will take place at Brookside School in North Merrick on Wednesday.

 

The Bellmore-Merrick Community Parent Center will host a parent-targeted substance abuse awareness program called, "Dangers in Your Medicine Cabinet: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Children” on Wednesday.

The seminar will address prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse by children.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, more than seven percent of youth who are 12 to 17-years-old, reported non-medical use of prescription medications.

Prescription and over-the-counter drugs are among the most commonly abused drugs by 12th graders after alcohol, marijuana and tobacco, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

The seminar will take place at Brookside School in North Merrick at 7 p.m.

Hopefully the speakers will discuss home drug testing as an option for these parents. Many of them do not know that home drug tests exist. They are affordable, accurate, and confidential. This should be kept a family matter, and parents need to be educated.
