Basketball Clinic Is a Slam Dunk at Newbridge Park

High temps don't stop Hofstra University and the Town of Hempstead from holding a free basketball clinic for kids.

On Tuesday afternoon Hofstra Athletics teamed up with the Town of Hempstead Parks and Recreation Department to offer a free basketball clinic at Newbridge Road Park.

Hoop it Up With Hofstra is part of a series of clinics being offered throughout the summer.

Kids age 7-13 participated, learning from Hofstra men's and women's basketball players and coaches.

The temperature pushing 100 degrees didn't stop the kids from playing their hardest and learning to improve their basketball skills.

"Giving back to community is great," said coach Tanika Price. "We want to let them know we are always willing to help and want to give back any way we can."

The kids who participated in the clinic not only learned new basketball skills but also had the opportunity to win prizes including t-shirts, gift certificates, and also to sign up for The Jr. Pride Club.

During the clinic, kids were placed in four groups learning a different skill in each - rebounding, shooting, passing and defense. Hofstra players first showed the proper fundamentals to complete each skill and the kids followed by imitating what they just learned taking turns one by one.

Many parents expressed gratitude and said they hoped that these clinics would continue.

Each clinic is open to both boys and girls and lasts approximately one hour.

Pre-registration is required. Call 292-9000, ext. 245 or email vsparaccio@tohmail.org to registrer or for more information.
